Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport is located 9 kilometres southwest of Alicante, in the municipality of Elche. The airport opened to national and international passenger- and cargo- traffic in 1967. Due to continual growth in traffic and passenger numbers, the airport has since been expanded and modernised several times. The new and current terminal building, which can handle close to 6,000 passengers per hour and up to 20 million passengers per year, was opened in March 2011.
In 2023, close to 16,000,000 passengers travelled via Alicante Airport. There are connections to most major cities in Europe and the airport is a hub for Ryanair, Vueling, Norwegian Air, and Jet2. Other than a few flights to North Africa, passengers arriving from outside Europe usually clear customs in Madrid or Barcelona and then catch a connecting flight to Alicante.
